The castle of Éguilly is located in the town of the same name, in Côte-d'Or, 6 km northwest of Pouilly-en-Auxois.
Located to the east of the village, bordered by the A6 motorway, it was built from the 12th century on a site where a wooden fort had already been erected in the Gallo-Roman era.
Initially composed of six towers, the medieval fortified castle was fitted out in a more residential way in the 15th century in a style announcing the Renaissance.
This plain fortified castle has nevertheless retained an austere appearance, thick walls, the dwelling following an L-shaped plan being framed on the facade by square towers and a third tower, adjoining, housing part of the servants' quarters. At the rear, forming a courtyard, earlier round towers still equipped with defensive elements adjoin the outbuildings.
A 15th century well in the courtyard and stables with 17th century paving complete the ensemble.
Having belonged to various noble lords in the Middle Ages, the estate became the property of the Choiseul family in the 17th century, then in the 18th century that of Mac-Mahon.
In the last third of the 20th century, a new owner, Roger Aubry, initiated a vast restoration project. Since 2015, work has been continued by Fabio and Françoise Magnani.
Listed in the inventory, with beautifully crafted gardens, the château is open to the public from time to time for cultural events. Information on +33 6 03 59 46 95.
