Church Saint-Carrad'Heuc

Monument in Donzy

The primitive foundation of the church of Donzy goes back to the early years of the twelfth century and is attributed to Hervé II, baron of Donzy in 1121; It was served until the Revolution by a college of canons.

It became collegiate in the thirteenth century to shelter the relics of a hermit who had been brought by Breton monks to the neighboring village of Bretonniere. The translation of the relics took place in 1170, in that same year King Louis VII, the young aided by Guy, Count of Nevers, attacked Hervé III Baron de Donzy, besieged and razed his castle.

The church suffered for the first time from this assault, and experienced other plunder; It was rebuilt around 1180 and then again ruined by the fires of 1440 and 1488 which ravaged the city. It was rebuilt at the beginning of the sixteenth century in flamboyant style. On June 12, 1508, Jean Baillet, Bishop of Auxerre, and the Countess Francoise d'Albret permit the reconstruction of Saint Carradh'euc; We owe this reconstruction the lateral door of the church. In 1569 the Calvinists, masters of Entrains and La Charité sur Loire ransacked the collegiate church, which had been devastated since then, and was banned for worship by the bishop of Auxerre at the end of the ancien regime. In 1839 a subscription of the inhabitants of Donzy and a gift of Louis Philippe and Queen Amélie allowed the restoration of the church.

The reconstruction lasted 10 years.

From the old church there remains only the choir and part of the north collateral where the first chapel, that of the baptismal font contains an altar and columns of the sixteenth century. In the second chapel of flamboyant style the arches of the vault fall back on the pillars adorned with symbols of the evangelists. The tower has a height of 37 meters.

At the base of the tower, the epigraph "Liberty, equality, fraternity" which arouses the curiosity of the tourists results from an opposition "worthy of the adventures of Pepone and Don Camillo".

In 1881, the mayor wanted to paint the vane of the church in republican colors on the occasion of the national holiday. There followed a dispute which lasted from 1881 to 1897 with the parish priest. The mayor ordered the processions to be prohibited by a communal decree; The priest passed him by, which led him to prison for two days in 1897. During these events, the mayor painted on the wall "Communal Property" and then the epigraph, which can now be read "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity ". The event took on a national dimension and a decision of the Council of State annulled the court decision and rehabilitated the vicar Bailly.

After the rebuilding of the church from 1839 to 1849, the houses aligned at the foot of the church were demolished to build the courtyard and staircase in 1856. These houses, parallel to the church, bordered an alley called in the past Rue du Cloître; They were occupied by shops and workshops of craftsmen. In the eighteenth century, according to Abbe Rougé, the merchants at Donzy were in small numbers.
