Palace of the Ducs de Bourgogne

Monument in Dijon

The Palace of the Dukes and Estates of Burgundy is one of the major sites of Dijon. It is an architectural complex consisting of different parts dating from successive periods: the oldest are from the fourteenth century (the Ducal Palace) and the most recent of the nineteenth century (facade of the Museum of Fine Arts).

Thus met the former palace of the Dukes, east, rebuilt in the fifteenth century under Philip the Good, became the king house and the Governor of the Province from the sixteenth century, Gothic palace and the state of Burgundy built in the seventeenth century (west), classical style. The whole unit is embodied by the façade designed by the architect of the King of France Jules Hardouin-Mansart (1646-1708). He unified the different elements of this palace outsized and so gave the face prestige building that we know today, centered on a courtyard and the Place Royale (now Liberation Square) and flanked by two during Flore yard west and bar courtyard to the east.

Historical Monument in 1862, now houses the town hall of the city but also the Museum of Fine Arts and the tourist office, the palace reflects the power of the old Duchy of Burgundy and the prominent place that the province obtained when the kingdom of France was unified.

It was not a clean slate of the past: the best symbol is the tower Philip the Good (also called round the terrace), preserved in the center of this set, and remains the symbol of power of the Dukes city.

Several ways to discover this palace are available, visits including the Museum of Fine Arts, or being centered on the former site of ducal power (kitchen, guardroom, chapel elected halls States)... All courses and experiences that allow to understand the rich history of the site but also to admire the architecture and exceptional scenery reflecting centuries of art history.
