The castle of Désaignes is located in the town of the same name, in Ardèche, in the heart of the natural and historical region of Vivarais.
It dates from the 14th century and a number of original elements have been preserved such as the main courtyard and the farmyard, mullioned windows, a later wrought iron gate (15th century), monumental fireplaces, a spiral staircase and its chapel.
The castle was built for the Retourtour family, whose eldest were the lords of Désaignes but also of several neighboring fiefs, and who served several kings including Philippe le Bel.
Protected as historical monuments, the castle houses the municipal museum which highlights local history (whether major events but also the daily life of peasants in the past). Local products are also highlighted. Temporary exhibitions are hosted each year.
