In the Tonnerrois, in a clearing in Maulnes forest, stands an imposing castle that's unusual to say the least. It was built between 1566 and 1573 for the Duke of Uzès and the Countess of Tonnerre. The pentagonal shape and labyrinthine design of this former hunting lodge, now a listed Historic Monument, make it an amazing and unique building!
By the D12 road, 5 kilometres north of the village of Cruzy-le-Châtel, an uphill path through the forest leads visitors to this magical and mysterious place. The Renaissance-style main building is arranged around a magnificent central spiral staircase, at the bottom of which is a well supplied with water by three springs.
After a period of neglect, when it almost fell into ruin, it was bought in 1997 by the department of Yonne, which undertook restoration work. You can discover its unique architecture and singular history on guided and self-guided tours, adventure tours and seasonal events. It's a lively place all year round with many activities such as concerts, a horse festival, themed and night-time tours and more.
