The church of Saint-Sauveur is located at Crest, in the Drôme, 25 km south-east of Valence.
It was built from 1842 to 1848 on the site of a previous church dating from the twelfth century, whose arches had been destroyed during the wars of religion, and which collapsed partially in 1836.
Only the orientation of the new church was different, now oriented north-south to free space and accommodate the market in the center of the small city of medieval origin.
The church of Saint-Sauveur is neo-classical and was designed by a young architect saying inspiration from the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome. There are also Italian influences, as evidenced by its facade that evokes an ancient temple with columns adorned with scroll capitals that surmount a frieze and a triangular pediment.
Also note that this facade is stone, the rest of the imposing building being rubble.
Inside, the grand stand was built in 1860 and the organ was installed in 1934.
Finally, a new dome was made in 2011, in a decidedly southern style.
Protected as a historic monument since 1983, the church, which offers quality acoustics, regularly hosts concerts.
Open to visitors every day from mid-March to mid-October from 10am to 6pm.
