Coteaux-du-Blanzacais

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Charente

New common Charente region in New Aquitaine, Coteaux-du-Blanzacais takes place about thirty kilometers of Angouleme and its famous festival of comics, near Bessac, Angeduc and Champagne-Vigny. She was born on 1 January 2017 from the merger of Blanzac-Porcheresse, Cressac-Saint-Genis and Saint-Léger.

Populated long ago, the territory of Coteaux-du-Blanzacais took off in the course of the twelfth century, including the construction of a fortified castle on Blanzac-Porcheresse. The latter was besieged by the troops of Richard the Lion Heart to punish the barons to be loyal to the King of France, Philip Augustus. Over the centuries, the town took the face it has today, retaining its charm and authenticity.

At the heart of the vineyards and unspoiled landscapes, including making Coteaux-du-Blanzacais part of AOC Cognac, the new town continues to attract visitors lovers of outdoor excursions and old stones.

Things to see and do

Listed building, St Arthémy Blanzac church is dedicated to the Bishop of the martyred victim Arvernes the fourth century. Originally founded by monks of Puypéroux, it has yet its origins a bell tower and a twelfth century Romanesque choir, the thirteenth transept arms and a nave and a Gothic facade. On the capitals of the tower, one can admire beautiful sculptures of the twelfth century and many paintings that were discovered in the late 1990s as the baptism of Christ the fifteenth century, or the great Saint Christopher of the sixteenth century near the 'Entrance.

Walking through the village, you will also discover the old St. Nicolas church of Romanesque origin, the ancient Church of St. Andrew which one can still see two buttresses and a small window, or the Church Saint-Cybard Porcheresse. The latter is considered one of the oldest in the Angoumois and was raised in the course of the eleventh century. Rebuilt in the twelfth, she reveals particularly narrow windows monolith lintel and beautiful arches. It is now classified as an historic monument. Do not miss either the high defensive tower of the thirteenth century in the current college or Castle St. Andrew, a nineteenth mansion overlooking the road Villebois.

Listed building, the chapel of the Templars of Cressac-Saint-Genis was built in the twelfth century. In architecture, it respects the rules of Cistercian Bernard of Clairvaux revealing a simple rectangle facing East with a plan similar to that of the church of Sénanque. Retrieved by the Hospitallers in the fourteenth century, it was later sold as national property after the French Revolution. Protestant place of worship in the early twentieth century, the chapel has since experienced several restoration campaigns. Open to the public, it reveals such beautiful murals depicting battles of the Crusades or the Templars exploits. Religious reasons are also present with the weighing of souls by Michel or holy chrism. The building is built in ordinary limestone with a mortar of sand and lime and pilasters and angles stone. Nearby you can also visit the Church of Our Lady of Cressac the eleventh century and rebuilt in the nineteenth or Saint-Genis church surrounded by a cemetery.

Located in the heart of the village and also listed building, the Saint-Léger church is especially a great bell of the first half of the seventeenth century. Let yourself be seduced by the house of the Sablière, a building of the seventeenth century at right angles along with a small loft.
