The Château du Prieuré is located in the town of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, in the Yvelines department.
Located on the edge of the Seine, to the south-east of the city, it is a former priory acquired in 1808 by the LHéritor de Chézelles family. The masters of the place had the wings destroyed and the interior of the main building reorganized. In addition, a barn was built and an English-style park created.
Many owners succeeded one another thereafter, and the exteriors such as the castle underwent major alterations with, for example, the development of an underground passage to join the Seine and the construction of waterfalls and greenhouses... The castle itself was considerably redesigned: construction of the winter garden between the two wings, dressing of the facades in a neo-Renaissance and neo-Gothic style, as was the fashion of the time. In 1872, it was enlarged via a porch and in 1875, the north wing was added.
In 1931, the estate was acquired by the city. Municipal services were installed there and then, in 1966, the site, already listed in the Inventory, housed a shipping museum while the park was transformed into a public garden.
Renovated in 2015, the museum showcases collections related to the history of shipping and river trade (documents, models, works of art) and that of navigable waterways. Temporary exhibitions are scheduled within the Orangerie.
