Capital of Canton, this small town in the extreme southern tip of the Rhône department, has the distinction of being the crossroads of three departments: the Rhone, the Loire and Isère which used three provinces: Lyonnais The Drill and the Dauphiné. Condrieu and has a rich historical past.
Condrieu was founded in 59 BC. AD by a Roman leader named Florius that would be installed along the stream of Arbuel. The town's origins date back well in Roman times as evidenced by the old name of Condrieu "Condriacum" meaning in its etymology, home on the water.
The fortified village of the Middle Ages, Condrieu undergoes changes to become, through the port, the capital of the inland waterways until the late 19th century, when navigation was in competition with the railway. These links with the river, there is the practice of jousting.
A Condrieu, trails in the hills called the race. They were used for access to vineyards that were surrounded by walls with doors locked. They all bear the names: patrol, Ronchard, Corbery etc ... and all offer beautiful views. In the vineyards are nestled huts or houses where lived a laborer.
