Condé-sur-l'Escaut is a town of nearly 10,000 inhabitants located in the Nord department. Installed on the Scheldt, as its name suggests, it is also part of the suburb of Valenciennes and is about fifty kilometers from Lille.
Formerly located in Gaul Belgium, the city of Condé-sur-l'Escaut became Frankish at the time of the Invasions. Formerly, the town owed its fame to its mining, before the last coal mine closed in 1989. Now, this rather residential town is entirely focused on tourism, with a fairly important historical and architectural heritage.

Built in the 12th century in a Romanesque style, the feudal castle of Nicolas d'Avesnes was remodeled in a Phillipian style in the 15th century. Since the 20th century, the châtelet has accommodated private accommodation. You can still admire a water mill from the end of the 15th century which served as a dovecote after the French Revolution. Not far away, it is possible to admire the châtelet of the Hostel de Bailleul dating from the beginning of the 15th century.
Often remodeled, the urban wall of Condé-sur-l'Escaut dates from the 12th century. It was notably transformed in the 18th century by Vauban, before seeing the addition of a blockhouse in the 20th century.
Walking through the city, you can admire the former convent of the Gray Nuns from the 16th century, the Porte Vautourneux from the beginning of the 18th century, or even a former post house.
Dating from 1751, the Saint-Wasnon church has been classified as a Historic Monument. Mainly in a classical style, it also has a bell tower from 1607, in brick, stone and sandstone. Inside, it is possible to admire stalls decorated with musical instruments, as well as a beautiful painting of the assumption of Mary.
Impossible to miss the town hall from the end of the 18th century, the Hermitage castle listed as an historic monument, or the pretty town kiosk.
The Chabaud-Latour leisure center is an opportunity to enjoy nature and learn about fishing or take beautiful walks.
Lively, the city of Condé-sur-l'Escaut offers a large number of events of all kinds to entertain its inhabitants and visitors.

Festival of street arts, the Turbulents invade the old Condé-sur-l'Escaut in April.
In June, it's time for the pond festival at the Chabaud-Latour leisure center. This is an opportunity to discover different local associations and learn about natural activities such as fishing or cycling.
The 24h of improvisation are organized in June with different companies from all over Europe.
