Nestling on the edge of a lake, the small scenic town of Combourg is dominated by the pepper-pot turrets of its feudal castle.

The Romantic writer Chateaubriand, who grew up in the medieval château and wrote, "It was in the woods of Combourg that I became what I am", has shaped the town's history. Open to visitors, the 13th- and 15th-century château has the bedroom and souvenirs of the famous writer on display.
