Chavanoz

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Isère

Municipality of Isère, in the Auvergne - Rhône-Alpes region, Chavanoz takes place about a hundred kilometers from Grenoble, in the former royal province of Dauphiné. It is located at the edge of the Rhône and Ain departments, not far from Lyon, Janneyrias and Leyrieu.

Populated since the Neolithic, as evidenced by the remains found on site, the territory of Chavanoz was occupied by the Gauls and then the Romans before experiencing significant growth in the Middle Ages with the construction of a religious center held by monks of Île Barbe.

Very dynamic, the city of Isère turned towards trade and industry today offers its visitors an architectural and historical heritage of great interest.

Things to see and do

Partly listed in the Historical Monuments for its western facade and the graffiti in its attic, the former 11th century priory saw its 16th century chapel become the town's church. Replacing a first Merovingian building, it unveils an important collection of cult objects.

Passing through the town hall, the old Panettes castle, you can admire some vestiges of the old priory, as well as an impressive 14th century round tower.

While strolling in the town, do not miss to visit two old mills which now house private dwellings or the twelve crosses spread all over its territory.
