Located in the south-east of the Loiret department, on the left bank of the Loire, Châtillon today has more than 3,000 inhabitants. The town is bordered by the Loire lateral canal and retains the remains of an ancient city. It is a welcoming town, with a relaxing environment, where green and river tourism has developed.
On the hill, the old town will surprise you with its narrow streets, its half-timbered houses, the ruins of Château-Gaillard. Its suburb of Nancray has an interesting heritage, notably the winegrowers' houses of rue St Vincent, one of which dates from 1604. Grande Rue, discover houses whose oldest remains are from the 15th century or others in the Renaissance style, on on the hill the neo-Gothic Saint-Maurice church but also the Protestant temple, the renovated wash houses along the Ethelin river.
On the banks of the Loire, Mantelot, a site classified as a Historic Monument in 1978, is an unmissable place that will transport you to the era of the canal's commercial navy. The lock formerly allowed boats, using the Loire side canal, to cross the river, in order to return to the canal on the right bank.
In 1841, the construction of the suspension bridge opened up Châtillon-sur-Loire.
