Perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Cure, Chastellux Castle is one of the oldest fortresses in Morvan. Construction work on this magnificent medieval complex, surrounded by beautiful greenery, indeed began in the 11th century, with the St. John Tower and keep remaining from that period.

The estate is inseparably linked to the Chastellux family, who were close to the Dukes of Burgundy and have occupied the place for nearly 1,000 years. The forest connection of the lineage and the site is clear to see, with the 1,700 hectares of woodland surrounding the castle. The owner, Count Philippe de Chastellux, conducts the guided tours with talent and never hesitates to include a few anecdotes when telling the story of the place.

The fortress flanked by eight towers has been remodelled and embellished many times. Inside, you can admire the 13th-century guard room, which houses precious Gobelins tapestries, the dining room which was renovated during the Restoration, a portrait gallery and a library with superb bindings. Then it's time to discover the castle's remarkable park designed by Le Nôtre, which visitors are free to enter with no admission fee. Its canal and two ponds, as well as its many species of trees and plants are all attractions that will delight walkers.
