La Maison du Saumon is located at Chartres, in the historic center of the city, near the cathedral.
This 15th and 16th century half-timbered building originally adjoined the town's fish market, and it is still located "rue de la Poissonnerie".
Its first owner, Catherine Maubuisson, ran a large import-export business. The building owes its name to the fish carved on one of the six consoles of the facade, which support the corbel on the first floor. This salmon therefore had ensign value.
Other sculpted elements are observable, such as an evocation of the Annunciation or of Saint-Michael slaying the dragon. Another curiosity: at the corner of the rue du Poisson Doux, is represented a sow tied up with its distaff and spindle. This theme is borrowed from a fable by Phaedrus whose morality reminds us that one should not undertake work incompatible with one's natural dispositions… There is another evocation of this same work at the level of the cathedral.
This beautiful building was badly damaged during a bombardment in 1944. Already listed, it has been restored. The Maison du Saumon now houses the Tourist Office. The tourist attractions of the city are presented there through models, films, exhibitions...
