Castle of Chanteloup

Monument in Chanteloup

The castle of Chanteloup is located in the commune of the same name, in the Manche department, 11 km northeast of Granville.

Located 600 m south of the town, it was mentioned in the 11th century as dependent on the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel, and was built by a companion of William the Conqueror. At the end of the 13th century, the family of lords of Chanteloup joined forces with that of Paynel through the marriage of Agnès de Chanteloup with Foulques III Paynel. Their descendant Foulques IV will be a powerful lord of Normandy, baron of Briquebec and lord of several strongholds including Chanteloup. No less than 14 squires are among its faithful.

Confiscated by the English from 1418 to 1449, the domain was taken over on that date by the constable of Richemont. He restored the keep and the enclosure, damaged during the Hundred Years' War. In 1536, a new main building was built by Antoine d'Estouvil, more comfortable than the original castle which nevertheless remained nearby.

New dwellings were added in 1665 by Jean de Montgomery.

When the Revolution occurs, preventively, the drawbridge is removed, the keep is leveled on the second level and the two towers framing the postern are also reduced.

Today, a bridge with two arches allows entry into the courtyard and the gatehouse, the remains of the 14th century keep (still 20 m high when there were 10 more before 1789) have been preserved, and had a crenellated top). Furthermore, the 16th century dwelling, built in granite, has Renaissance decorations (pilasters with foliage, friezes decorated with medallions, panels decorated with leaves or fantastic animals).

The castle is the center of an operation comprising 12 hectares of orchards used to produce cider and calvados.

Festive and cultural events (notably sound and light) and costumed visits are offered throughout the year.

Free or guided tour (including the park, the animals and the cider estate) during school holidays and from Monday to Saturday in July and August. Outside school holidays, shop open from Thursday to Saturday.
