Located in the heart of Savoie, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, the Museum of Fine Arts of Chambéry takes place in the city center, in the former grain market raised in the late nineteenth century.
In 1889, the municipality decided to transform the site into a museum-library, with a collection of paintings installed on the second floor. The collections are then made up of legacies of private collectors, like the abbot of Mellarède who brought the first works. Entirely transformed into a Museum of Fine Arts in the early 1990s, the site was completely renovated in the 2000s to be open to the public again.
Inside, it is possible to admire beautiful collections of Italian painting, with the second largest collection in France behind the Louvre. The museum also has a very fine collection of contemporary Savoyard paintings, as well as French works by artists as famous as Fragonard or Georges de La Tour. The site also offers painters from the northern school like Anton von Worms.
Temporary exhibitions are regularly organized in the Fine Arts Museum of Chambéry, highlighting particular streams or artists.
