Castle of Caramagne

Monument in Chambéry

Caramagne Castle is located in Chambéry, in Savoie. It was built in the 16th century on the Boisse hill by a lawyer from the village of Caramagna, in Italian Piedmont.

The property then passed to several noble families (the Bertrand de la Pérouse then the Bellegarde) who proceeded to reorganize them. Rented by the British in the 19th century, the castle was the setting in 1820 of the marriage of the poet Alphonse de Lamartine with a young woman of English origin, Marianne Elisa Birch.

Architecturally, there are many Italian references, such as the marble columns that support the loggia, the trompe l'oeil paintings, and, inside, the ceiling covered with a stucco decoration while rockeries and volutes around a vaulted box in the center of the room.

Protected as historical monuments, with a park, the estate has an imposing entrance which opens onto a large avenue of plane trees and the commons arranged in a hemicycle.

The property is private. It can only be visited occasionally (Heritage Days) and sometimes hosts concerts or cultural events.
