The castle of Chamaret is located in the eponymous town, in the Drôme, 30 km south-east of Montélimar.
It was originally a feudal castle built in the 12th century by the lords of the place, then its suzerainty was shared with the bishops of Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux. It is now in the state of vestiges, the northern part having already collapsed in 1696 then in 1772. All that remains is the ruins of the old fortified enclosures, the keep and the two main buildings. One of them, however, is flanked by a square tower of medieval origin, which may have been used for a time to emit signals, and which was restored in 1895 at the expense of a native of the village.
30 meters high, it dominates the remains (with which it forms a group protected as historical monuments), but also the village which was formed at the foot of the old castle and the entire Valréas plain.
At its summit, you can therefore enjoy a panoramic view that will delight visitors! Free entry. Information on +33 4 75 46 50 82.
