Chaillac

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Indre

Charming little town in the Indre, in the Centre-Val-de-Loire region, Chaillac takes place in the natural region of Boischaut Sud, on the edge of Haute-Vienne. It is located not far from Lignac, Roussines or Sacierges-Saint-Martin, about sixty kilometers from Châteauroux.

Old, the town was particularly famous in the Middle Ages thanks to the viscounts of Brosse. But it is its barite and fluorite deposit, the largest in the world, that made it famous.

The 100 km of paths accessible on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback will delight visitors who come to enjoy a unique natural setting in the heart of the Berry landscapes.

Things to see and do

Built by the Viscount of Limoges, Géraud, the Château de Brosse dates from the 10th century. Today in ruins, it benefits from an inscription in the Historical Monuments. Passing visitors can still admire a door with a window, part of a polygonal tower, a well with coping or even the remains of the walls. Of the castle of the Middle Ages, there remains only the circular keep and its curtain from the 13th century, and the towers rebuilt in the 15th century.

Also listed as a Historic Monument, the Saint-Pierre church dates from the 13th century. Decorated with a massive 18th century bell tower, it reveals a Romanesque nave, as well as a transept and apse in the flamboyant ogival style.

To learn more about the Chaillac deposits, head to the Mineralogy Museum. The latter traces the extraction of mineral resources in the region and exhibits Chaillacois minerals as well as others from all over the world.

While strolling through the town, you can also discover prehistoric remains, with in particular the dolmens of Fromentaux and Pierres Nouilles or the menhir of Bernarderie.

Many marked hiking trails allow you to appreciate Berry's nature and are accessible on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback.
