Château du Bois Saumoussay is located in the new town of Bellevigne-les-Châteaux, in the Maine-et-Loire department, 10 km south of Saumur.
Located precisely to the south of the hamlet of Saumoussay, in the old village of Chassé, this is a manor house consisting in particular of a dwelling-porch (forming a door). It dates from the 16th century but the site is mentioned from the 13th century as the seat of a small seigniory which was owned by different families until the 17th century. At that time, the lands of Samoussey were incorporated into the marquisate of Brézé. Excavations have established that the mansion was once at the center of a protected courtyard of curtain walls connecting three quadrangular towers. These have disappeared.
The manor, which has undergone restoration work, has regained real nobility with its highlighted original materials and its Renaissance style (openings, decor).
However, the site protected as historical monuments remains private property not accessible to the public. The exteriors of the manor (adjacent to outbuildings) and the courtyard can nevertheless prove to be a pleasant destination for hiking in the heart of a region otherwise so rich in castles and famous sites...
