Cervon is a village in the Nièvre department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, 60 kilometers north-east of Nevers.
The vast municipality (54 km²) is located in the natural region of Morvan, and is largely wooded. Formed of a village on a plateau overlooking the Yonne valley and the mountains of Morvan and many hamlets, Cervon was founded in the sixth century after a hermit established an abbey.
This one developed and the town was erected in fortified lordship.
The town paid a heavy price for the rural exodus, exceeding the 2,000 inhabitants in the nineteenth century to now only 620.
However, its rich history has left as a legacy an important heritage built both religious (abbey) and civil (castles). Included in the perimeter of the Regional Natural Park of Morvan, the municipality also has a quality environment. This makes it a popular stop for lovers of green and cultural tourism.
If there are only remains (cellars) of the old Saint-Eptade abbey, the Romanesque church Saint-Barthélemy which was the collegiate church can be the starting point of a heritage visit of the locality.
From the original building of the twelfth century, there remains only a tympanum where we distinguish the figure of Christ. The portal was remodeled in the 15th century, and we will linger at the level of a 17th century altarpiece depicting the Virgin. A wooden Christ and the stalls of the nave are also worth a look.
Traces of ancient fortifications are still visible in the immediate vicinity of the church. Visit on request at +33 3 86 20 08 29.
On the religious level, still, to the south-west of the town, the chapel Notre-Dame de Marcilly contains a magnificent polychrome stone sculpture of the sixteenth century depicting the Virgin in red mantle.
On the civic level, in the village itself, the House of Providence, a nunnery establishment of the nineteenth century is to be seen, but it will be necessary to traverse the municipal territory and its hamlets to admire many other testimonies of the local history and the rich families who shared land and seigniorial rights under the Ancien Régime.
Thus, after the ruins of the Castle of Some, we will discover to the east the castle of Cuzy, on a hill, which dates from the seventeenth century and depended on Château-Chinon.
A particular mention then for the castle of Lantilly, in the northwest. It is a noble manor rebuilt in the seventeenth century and remodeled in the nineteenth on the remains of a medieval fortress partly destroyed during the Wars of Religion.
Transformed into a guest house with reception rooms, the castle is open to visitors in summer. The opportunity to discover some rooms closed to the public the rest of the year, the majestic frame, but also the gardens and woods of the property, via a thematic path designed to apprehend the rich fauna and flora of the site. Guided tours in July and August from 15h to 18h except Tuesday. Entry: 5.50 euros. Information on +33 3 86 20 01 22.
Then, on the banks of the Yonne, the castle of Marcilly (fifteenth and sixteenth centuries), and the remains of the castles of Paimpoirier, Tressolles and Pontot (which remains two towers of the fifteenth) are also included in a ride discovery.
Some strong houses and more than twenty washhouses and mills, which attest to the rich agricultural activity of yore, will also mark this course, not to mention the Chaumière de Certain, typical of the Morvan.
In terms of natural heritage, walks will include some natural cavities and protected areas.
