Located near the Place des Palmistes, at Cayenne, the Alexandre-Franconie Museum takes place in a beautiful Creole residence sold at the end of the 19th century by Gustave Franconie to the government of the time.
A sort of cabinet of curiosities, this territorial museum of French Guiana reconstitutes a concentrate of the very essence of French Guiana. On site, visitors can discover natural history collections, but also collections retracing the history of the penal colony, Amerindian or Creole crafts, models, minerals or even historical paintings. We will not fail to admire the collection of insects of Father Yves Barbotin with nearly 4000 specimens, the paintings of the former convict Francis Lagrange or even funeral urns from the Ariste culture.
Labeled Museum of France, the Alexandre-Franconie museum also benefits from the Maison des Illustres label, in homage to its former owner who bequeathed his name to it, a philanthropist and humanist who collected an important library as well as numerous objects from Guyana.
