A picturesque medieval village in Aveyron, Castelnau-Pégayrols has the distinction of having five historic monuments, including three listed and two registered monuments: an 11th-15th-18th-century castle, the old Priory of St Michael, the Church of St Michael and Church of Our Lady from the 11th-12th centuries, and a 15th-century medieval hydraulic network. The walk along its typical side streets is also delightful!

Castelnau-Pégayrols

Formerly Castelnau-de-Lévésou.

Castelnau-Pégayrols is a common Regional Natural Park of Grands Causses, 21 km north west of Millau, 8 km from Montjaux and 9 km from Saint-Beauzély. Leaning against the southwestern slope of the plateau Lévézou the edge of a sheer rock, this medieval village overlooking the deep gorge of the valley of the Muse.

Castelnau has the privilege of owning five historic buildings; it is a significant built heritage, exceptional for a small village. west side, it still preserves the remains of the fortifications (tower wall).

Things to see and do

The castle in 1238 Lévézou Bernard was lord of Castelnau de Lévézou, St. Beauzély, Castelmus, Roquetaillade, Marziale, Comprégnac. In the 18th century, it will be bought by Jacques-Julien Pégayrolles who gave his name to this locality.

The St. Michael's Church, 11th and 15th centuries, with three naves Romanesque crypt that would have recommended to treat eye diseases.

The Church of Our Lady of the 11th and 12th centuries with a single nave.

The Priory of twelfth, fifteenth, nineteenth centuries.

The medieval aqueduct. It worked with a reserve of water above the village. The underground water system allowed to run simultaneously a set of three flour mills and oil. It is classified by the World Monuments Watch Top 100 world monuments to be protected.

See also in the municipality, Aura Ventosa (Fadarelles church or church of the fairies). Old building troglodyte monks of the order of Grandmont Comberoumal before installation, these ones were built during the early days of this order, under the fourth Abbot Stephen of Liciac between 1139 and 1154.

Castelmus: village built on the crest of a hill facing Castelnau on the bank opposite to the Muse. This village seems to be the cradle of the family Lévézou, from the 10th century, there are lords in Lévézou Castelmus Vezins and the castle of the 12th century.

The amusement park of Bouscaillous, the town of Castelnau-Pégayrols is a website offering outdoor activities, karting, quad biking, paintball, in a wooded park of 30 hectares. Possibility of on-site catering.
