Castelnau-le-Lez

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Hérault

The common Castelnau-le-Lez is located in the department of Herault and Languedoc-Roussillon region, northeast of Montpellier. The Lez is its western boundary with Montpellier and the town is located four miles north and as the crow flies from the Mediterranean Sea.

Its inhabitants are called Castelnauviens and Castelnauviennes.

Around 700 BC, a first population settled on the plateau overlooking the Substantion Lez. The Romans are in the city of Sextantio, the "sixth relay station from the Pyrenees on the Via Domitia".

Over time, his name becomes Substantion and the city hosts for three centuries the bishops of Maguelone. A castle dominates while the left bank of the Lez, the Novum Castellum.

During the 12th century, the city lost its influence by becoming a possession of the lords of Montpellier. In 1674, Castelnau changes hands: Castries family becomes the owner of the lordship which also includes Cres and Salting. Castelnau in 1791 had 68 inhabitants.

During the Old Regime, she formed a single parish with the Crès under the successive names of Castelnau-les-Montpellier and Castelnau-Le Cres.

In 1872, when they separated the Commons of Cres and Castelnau are emerging. With the demographic development of their remote village to the east of the municipal territory, the inhabitants of Cres asked their erection in common in 1846 and in 1849 the City Council finally agreed Castelnau in 1871. The original area of the town now is proportional to its share in the population of Castelnau-Le Cres in 1871, which must be subtracted a few changes for the benefit of Cres in the 1990s for his secondary school and sports facilities are within its territory . The expanding population of Castelnau in the second half of the 20th century, the scrubland between the two towns was gradually reduced. Castelnau-le-Lez became the chief town of the canton of Castelnau-le-Lez, established in 1992. Previously, Castelnau was part of the canton of Montpellier.

The extension of the city to the east has given birth to a new neighborhood "the Devois" and the new residents are Castelnau-le-Lez population to nearly 15,000 inhabitants in the early 2000s.
