The place name comes from the Gallic Casseuil "cassanos" meaning "oak". According to the base Palissy, a remnant of a very important building in the 8th century that could be the birthplace of Louis first possible "the Pious" but also called the Pious, indicated by the texts of the Middle Ages. Three sites argue about who named the place "Cassinogilum", namely Chasseneuil Poitou, Casseneuil in Lot-et-Garonne and Gironde Casseuil. Louis the Pious was born April 16, 778 in the path of the Spanish expedition undertaken by Charlemagne accompanied by his wife Hildegard who give birth to twins, one will die quickly. The location of a rich house and the sarcophagus of a small child were found during excavations at Casseuil.
