Breton town, Carhaix-Plouguer is more precisely in the department of Finistère, about forty kilometers from Morlaix Guingamp. This small charming town is mainly its renowned European festival of the Old Plough, which annually hosts the biggest names in international music.
At the heart of Brittany, Carhaix-Plouguer enjoys an ideal location for exploring the great cities of the region, and enjoy an exceptional nature, especially in the Black Mountains and the Arrée Mountains. Its historic heritage is also important, the capital of Poher being one of the oldest cities in the west of France. Built there over 2,000 years by the Romans, the city of Carhaix-Plouguer present today many archaeological remains from this period.
Livelier, the Brittany town full of cultural and sporting events that attract visitors in its streets, bringing a cosmopolitan in the heart of Finistere. Many tourism or recreational facilities that dot the city, making Carhaix-Plouguer an ideal place for family holidays or friends.
Former capital of a Gallic people during the Roman occupation, Carhaix-Plouguer still has many vestiges of that era, as well as architectural and cultural heritage.
The archaeological reserve of the Gallo-Roman city of Vorgium, located in the city center, has helped to highlight the glorious past of Carhaix-Plouguer in Roman times. Even today, one can admire various ancient remains.
Romanesque church Saint-Pierre de Plouguer was repeatedly rebuilt, and today has Gothic and Renaissance elements. Built in the eleventh century, it was remodeled in the sixteenth century and restored in the mid-20s following a fire.
Built in the late nineteenth century, St. Trémeur church is Gothic Revival and has a beautiful bell tower of Gothic style.
Walking through the city, one can discover beautiful buildings like the house of the Seneschal, hosting today the Tourist Office, built in the sixteenth century and classified historic monument for its facades. The bridge of Petit Carhaix, the eighteenth century, and the Moulin-Meur, of the same time, do not miss either of interest.
Built in 1760, the current castle was built Kerampuil for one of the ancestors of the squire Bertrand Duguesclin. Its facade and roof were listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments.
Also note the Red Castle, the early twentieth century, instead of the Tour d'Auvergne, or the mansion Kerampest which there remain only vestiges of the sixteenth century.
Difficult to find a more lively city that Carhaix-Plouguer in Finistere! Whatever the season, the events are held, attractive Britons and visitors on vacation.
Every Saturday morning the market Carhaix-Plouguer settled on the place of the fairground.
The festival of the Old Plough is one of the most popular festivals in France, and it was he who made the famous Carhaix-Plouguer throughout France and even Europe. In July, the artists of all kinds and from all countries succeed on festival stages, and, since 1991.
Every July 14, a Bagadañs is organized to celebrate the national holiday. This is a gathering of bagadou and Celtic circles came from all over Europe.
Since 1989 Carhaix-Plouguer welcomes every last weekend of October the book festival in Brittany. Egin organized by the cultural center, it is the opportunity to enjoy numerous authors and publishers discover stands. At the event, the price of the Roman City of Carhaix is given to a writer.
