Buzet-sur-Tarn is a commune in the Haute-Garonne department, in the Occitanie region, 30 km northeast of Toulouse. Be careful not to confuse it with another town in the region, Buzet-sur-Baïse (Lot-et-Garonne), known for its wines.

Bordering the department of Tarn to the east, vast of 30 km², the territory of Buzet-sur-Tarn belongs to the historical and cultural region of Frontonnais, between the courses of the Garonne and the Tarn, made up of stony terraces which gave birth to rich soils. More precisely, the locality is located in the Lauragais, a territory dedicated to cereal crops and livestock.

Nowadays, there is thus a majority of agricultural land in the municipality (58% of its area) and 31% of forests (i.e. its southwestern third).

A first village is mentioned as early as the 9th century when a bridge was built to span the course of the Tarn and connect Albi to Toulouse. A real village in the form of a bastide was then developed from 1235: a decision of the Count of Toulouse following the treaty of 1229 concluded with the King of France to put an end to the Albigensian crusade. Buzet was then protected by an enclosure which ensured the safety of the new inhabitants and controlled the traffic on the bridge…

Nowadays Buzet-sur-Tarn has become a small town in the countryside where there are nearly 2700 inhabitants. Its heritage and its picturesque heart, its bucolic landscapes, its forest and its leisure offer make it a pleasant stopover between Toulouse and Albi.

Things to see and do

In terms of heritage, the parish church of Saint-Martin is the jewel of the town. It was built in the 12th century before being consolidated during the creation of the bastide a century later. In the Toulouse Gothic style and featuring a red brick facade typical of the region, it was very affected by the religious wars. The church was subsequently remodeled, presenting a fortified character. Its bell tower, which served as a watchtower, evokes the Saint-Sernin basilica in Toulouse, 43 meters high if we take into account its seat tower with walls sometimes 3 meters thick. On the upper part, there are three octagonal floors pierced with bays. Battlements are also visible. Inside, the church itself listed in the Inventory houses real artistic treasures, most of which are classified. This is the case of the ceiling of the nave by the painter Damon de Toulouse (19th century) which evokes the style of Fra Angelico (Renaissance). In the choir, two paintings by Bénézet (19th century) representing episodes from the life of Saint Martin have been placed, and we can still admire a Baroque-style Pietà in polychrome and gilded wood, the pulpit in noble wood (1766), a polychrome and gilded sculpted wooden group from the 17th century, a Virgin and Child, a statue of Saint Roch and finally a rare reliquary from the 18th century for which the use of rolled paper was used.

In addition to the old houses and the narrow streets of the center with their preserved charm, the beautiful hall dating from 1884, a weighing scale (or public weight) with half-timbered architecture and equipped with a ceramic frieze (19th century) and of course the bridge over the Tarn. The stone bridge of medieval origin collapsed in 1718. A ferry was then established and it was not until 1872 that it was raised. However, the structure remains fragile, particularly due to flooding. This is why in 1955 a suspension bridge was finally built. Its foundations are brick, but concrete and steel have also been used. 150 m long, with a single track, it now connects the town to the cultivated hillsides which dominate it.

Finally, note the war memorial near the town hall and near the cemetery, the memorial dedicated to the memory of the resistance fighters who were victims of the Gestapo during the Second World War.

In terms of culture, activities are regularly offered at the library (information on +33 5 34 26 43 79) and shows and association events organized at the Espace Ribatel (party hall): contact +33 5 34 26 50 80.

For sports enthusiasts, the most prominent facility in the locality is the Palmola golf course, created in 1974. To the south-west of the town, on the edge of the forest, its course was designed by the architect Michael Fenn. 6100 m long for a "par 72", dotted with ponds and viewpoints over the neighboring countryside, it is particularly known to specialists for its most difficult hole (No. 2) in the shape of a dog- downhill leg (the hole cannot be seen from the teeing ground). However, golf is appreciated by seasoned players and beginners alike. There are also 28 practice stations (including 8 covered), a 10-hole putting green and an approach area for training. A restaurant and a swimming pool are also available. Open every day. Price: from 50 to 75 euros. Information on +33 5 61 84 20 50.

Visitors and holidaymakers can also book a tennis court in Buzat: join the local club on +33 6 76 09 36 66.

For fishermen, the banks of the Tarn are dotted with very interesting "spots". Find out about regulations and suitable sites on +33 6 12 86 77 19.

Hiking enthusiasts will finally find something to satisfy their passion in the town. Marked and slightly hilly paths thus cross the rich forest of Buzet, whose beauty and freshness are particularly appreciated in summer... It is partly protected for its biodiversity. Other loops include the agricultural areas of the hillsides, the banks of the Tarn and also make it possible to reach the vineyards of Gaillac to the northeast. It is also possible to join the outings of the local club: information on +33 6 43 35 89 32.
