Noirlac Abbey, in Bruère-Allichamps, Cher, is an unmissable stop on the Jacques Coeur historical route! Founded in the 12th century at the heart of Berry, in a sublime natural setting of wooded countryside on the banks of the Cher, it's a superb example of Cistercian monastic architecture.

It perfectly reflects the Cistercian spirit through the purity of its design, the simplicity of its architectural forms and the understated style of its ornaments. According to the Cistercian rules, the community of monks had to be strictly separated from that of the lay people. This is the case at Noirlac, where the buildings are organised around the cloister. To the east is the monks' wing with the dormitory, chapter house and calefactory, and to the west the more rudimentary lay building. The monumental abbey church and the refectory let in natural light through the rose windows and the contemporary stained glass windows designed by the artist Jean-Pierre Raynaud.

Since 2008, it has fulfilled its purpose as a cultural meeting place, with a rich programme of live performances and contemporary art exhibitions.
