Menhir Men Marz is located on the old town of Brignogan-Plages, in Finistere, 38 km north of Brest.
Listed as a Historical Monument in 1889, the menhir is located a hundred meters from the coast, in the center of the seaside resort which merged in 2017 with Plounéour-Trez to become Plounéour-Brignogan-plages.
It is considered the largest Christianized menhir in Brittany: in the Middle Ages, a cross was engraved on one side and a cross attached to its summit. Dating from the Neolithic (between - 4500 and - 2500 years BC), it is also one of the most imposing (8.50 m high, 3 m wide at its base and weighing about 80 tons). The menhir of Men Marz (which means Stone of the Miracle in Breton) presents a last specificity: the megalith is poised on the ground while most other menhirs are partially buried.
It gave birth to many legends: St. Paul Aurelian would have set the limit of the rise of water and for centuries, the local custom was that the girls come to throw a stone on the menhir. If it remained stuck in the notch, on the upper part of the giant stone, they would be married in the year.
The menhir of Men Marz will mark a pleasant hike on the coast of the well-known Coast of Legends.
