City of Essonne, in the Ile-de-France, Brétigny-sur-Orge takes place ten kilometers of Evry, on the left bank of the Seine, twenty-five kilometers from Paris and tourist monuments. It is located near Montlhery, Arpajon and Fleury-Merogis.

Inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the remains found there, the territory of Brétigny-sur-Orge began to develop in the Middle Ages, including the construction of its first church in the eleventh century. Strongly affected by the Hundred Years War, the town experienced a revival in the nineteenth, especially with the arrival of the railroad.

Today, this very dynamic Ile city continues to attract visitors with the charm of its architecture and ideal location for exploring the region.

Things to see and do

Listed building, the Church of St. Peter was built in the twelfth century on the remains of a pre-Roman edifice as evidenced by pottery shards found there. Restored sixteenth following the ravages of the Hundred Years War, it served as headquarters for the election of the first mayor of the city before returning to its first use.

Built in the seventeenth century on the remains of the first building of the thirteenth, the castle of the Fountain is a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture. Today it houses students of the Technological Institute of the University of Evry Val d'Essonne.

As you wander the city, you can also discover the ancient castle of the lords of Brétigny which there remains a manor house or the house of Carouge seventeenth century. The latter was rebuilt exactly the twentieth century and is associated with a water mill from the Middle Ages.
