Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Creuse

A small town in the Creuse, in the Châtaigneraie region, Boussac-Bourg takes place at the gates of Boussac, not far from Aubusson, Préveranges or Saint-Palais.

According to local legend, Boussac-Bourg was born from the establishment of a lookout post at the confluence of the Petite Creuse and the Beyroux, in Gallo-Roman times. Devastated by the Vandals in the 4th century, this first city would not have been rebuilt until around the year one thousand. It was not until the second half of the 20th century that the town experienced significant development linked to the industrialization of the territory, soon becoming the first industrial center of the Creuse.

Today very prosperous, the municipality of Boussac-Bourg has also invested in tourism, offering visitors numerous infrastructures as well as beautiful green spaces.

Things to see and do

Built in the 10th or 11th century from a wooden watchtower, the castle of Boussac-Bourg is today a site classified as a Historic Monument. Accessible by guided tour all year round, it was originally built around a rectangular keep. Partly destroyed by English troops in the 14th century, it experienced a real renaissance in the 15th century thanks to Jean I de Brosse, Marshal of France and companion of Joan of Arc. Renovated later by his grandson Jean III, he then saw the addition of a Renaissance-looking main facade, exterior galleries and ramparts. New modifications to the Revolution give it its current appearance, with in particular the destruction of the fortifications, the keep, the ramparts, the battlements and the chapel. Sold to individuals in the 1960s, it has regained all its brilliance thanks to the investment of its owners.

Listed as a Historic Monument, the Saint-Martin church is also worth a detour for its typical architecture of the region.
