Benedictine abbey having adopted the reform of Saint-Maure in the first half of the 17th century, the royal abbey of Bourgueil was founded at the end of the 10th century. It has had a glorious history over the centuries, in particular thanks to its wine production or the beauty of its gardens sung by Ronsard himself.
Ravaged by the English during the Hundred Years War and partly destroyed by the Huguenots, it was rebuilt and enlarged many times. Emptied of its monks during the French Revolution, the abbey of Bourgueil was then ruined, gradually losing its splendor.
Entirely restored thanks to volunteers, it now houses a museum with objects tracing its history. Passing visitors can also discover the buildings that still exist with the 18th century outbuildings, the Dîmes barn, the 13th century cellar buildings or the old 17th century castle which now houses a religious community.
Exhibitions, concerts and other film screenings are offered there throughout the year.
