Being part of the cross-border conurbation of Geneva, Bonneville flourishes in the Faucigny, at the confluence of the Arve and Borne. Located at the foot of the Mole and the tip of Andey, the town is perched at 477 meters of altitude to culminate at 1877 meters. Beatrice de Faucigny, daughter of Pierre II of Savoy, decided in 1262 to settle there and gave the town privileges. Bonneville was born and quickly became the administrative capital of the barony of Faucigny. Several times struck by violent fires, the city recovers and rebuilds each time. Bonneville has kept many vestiges of the medieval era that mark the streets and squares still today. It is therefore a journey into a past rich in history that promises this destination of altitude.
And the walk in the past begins with the square of the Hotel de Ville, formerly called Place du Parquet. You will be able to admire a fountain dating from 1768 in baroque style classified to Historic Monuments. The town hall itself is worth a look. The imposing stone building houses a stone from the Bastille of Paris. A few blocks away, the royal house, formerly the holiday residence of the King of Sardinia. Next to the royal house, the house of the heads invites you to raise your head. Sculpted in the facade, angels and demons are invited in the floors. A little further on, the bridge of Europe, dating from 1862, spans the Arve. Back in town, you can not miss the northern cafe with its cannonball stuck in the north wall.
An inescapable part of the historical heritage of Bonneville, the eponymous castle, built by Pierre II of Savoy, dominates the city on its rocky mound. Becoming prison after being castle, it is in very good condition, but is not open to visits.
The stronghold of Cormand is a beautiful ensemble composed of a building of the fourteenth century surrounded by two square towers and a chapel. The tower of La Poudrière, a reserve of powder, rises to 5.5 meters from the ground. You will not be able to miss this cylindrical and slender edifice towards the sky. Always high perched, but at 44 meters from the ground this time, the statue of King Charles-Felix dominates the city well encamped on the eponymous column. This edifice pays tribute to this sovereign who had the Arve tied up in order to avoid the sometimes bloody floods of the river.
Religious monuments are also very present on the territory. You will be able to admire the church of Saint-Martin de Pontchy dating from the 14th century in neo-Gothic style, the church Sainte-Catherine built between 1838 and 1842 in an Italian Renaissance style, the old church of Bonneville neogothic style and chapels of Thuet and the coast of Hyot.
