Boëge

Tourism, holidays & weekends guide in the Haute-Savoie

Small village of Haute-Savoie, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Boëge takes place about fifty kilometers from Annecy and its lake. It is located in the heart of the Green Valley, about thirty kilometers from Lake Geneva, not far from Villard, Bogève and Nangy.

Occupied since the Neolithic, the territory of Boëge developed in the Middle Ages with the installation of different families of lords. Long dependent on the Duchy of Savoy, the town joined France in the mid-19th century following a referendum.

Very dynamic, this Haut-Savoyard town has a rich architectural heritage to discover during a stay in the region.

Things to see and do

Rebuilt in the middle of the 19th century, the Saint-Maurice church is a fine example of neo-Gothic architecture. Classified as an historic monument for its tribune organ donated by Napoleon III when Savoy was joined to France, the building is in the form of a church with three naves without a transept with side chapels. Inside, visitors can admire a statue of Notre-Dame des Voirons, a 15th-century Black Madonna.

Erected in the 15th century on the orders of Louis de Langin, the Notre-Dame des Voirons chapel takes place next to the monastery of Notre-Dame-des-Voirons. Occupied by the Sisters of Bethlehem since the 1960s, the buildings are located at an altitude of nearly 1400 m on the ridges of the Voirons. Open for retreatants, the monastery also has a shop for passing visitors.

Do not hesitate to stroll in the Voirons to admire the breathtaking panorama of Lake Geneva, the foothills of the Jura, the Alps or even Mont-Blanc. Several marked hiking trails suitable for all levels are accessible on those that were once nicknamed the Pearl of Savoy.

The ruins of Rochefort castle are visible at an altitude of 943 meters on a rocky outcrop of the Voirons. The place is the birthplace of the family of Boëge.

Strolling through the streets of the village of Boëge, you can also discover the grenette which still houses grain measurements today. The site, used until the middle of the 19th century, is classified as a Historic Monument.

Events and festivities

The weekly market takes place every Tuesday morning on the Place des Marronniers.

Fireworks, parade with lanterns and ball are offered in mid-July for the national holiday.

Every year in September, the town organizes the Saint-Maurice fair with its cattle competition, garage sales, merry-go-rounds and musical entertainment.
