The history museum of the citadel of Blaye, in Gironde, is located in the former civil and military prison of the citadel of Blaye: a vast fortified military complex of 38 hectares which was built between 1685 and 1689 by the architect François Ferry under the supervision of Vauban.
This prison was then transformed into a bakery in 1831 and then abandoned after the Second World War until the museum was set up there. However, two bread ovens are preserved there.
The collections are dedicated to archaeological pieces unearthed on the site of the citadel itself, the purpose of which was to monitor the Gironde estuary (fortified watch posts were, moreover, set up in this strategic location since Antiquity). Elements from the former Saint-Romain abbey are also presented.
The public can also observe models of the old medieval castle, plans and other documents explaining the evolution and history of the site and finally discover collections evoking the daily life of yesteryear and the functioning of the bakery.
Price: 5 euros.
