Blanzy is a town of Saône-et-Loire, in the Burgundy-Franche-Comte region, 40 kilometers west of Chalon-sur-Saone, and bordering Montceau-les-Mines.
Located on the one hand between the Morvan and the axis of the Burgundy wine route linking Dijon, Beaune, Chalon and Mâcon, and on the other hand between the historical sites of Cluny and Autun, the territory is occupied from the beginning. Gallo-Roman era. Fief of different seigneuries from the Middle Ages to the Revolution, Blanzy hitherto common agricultural (breeding) develops during the nineteenth century with the rise of several industries, from mining to glass production through tuileries or oil mills.
These sectors of activity declined during the last quarter of the twentieth century, but the city, which now has more than 6,600 inhabitants, remained a stronghold of the industry (Michelin factory) while remaining a stronghold of the Charolais. The development of its heritage and its environment make it a pleasant stage for lovers of green and cultural tourism.
A discovery of the city can begin with that of its built and industrial heritage.
The church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul is one example: a first building built in the 10th century, then dependent on the abbey of Cluny, was restored in the 18th century. Demanding and dilapidated, the church was rebuilt in 1860 in a neo-Gothic style. Note that its steeple-close destroyed in 1920 by a cyclone was also rebuilt. Inside, we note the presence of a beautiful statuary and stained glass.
See also, the Court of Cluny, an old farm building in the center of the city which was restored in the nineteenth century and designed to accommodate a school and a rest home. Acquired by the city, the building has been renovated and now houses a community space.
South of the territory, overlooking the eponymous pond, the castle of Plessis is worth a look but can not visit. Old fortress built in the thirteenth century, several times overhauled, it was completely rebuilt at the end of the nineteenth century in a neo-Gothic style inspired by Viollet-le-Duc.
A step is then required at the Museum of Mine, a place called Puits Saint-Claude. One discovers what was the day-to-day life of the miners both in the "day" (lamp-making, wells and headframes, room of the mining machine) and in the "bottom" (galleries, methods of exploitation, machine of support...). Open on weekends from April to October and always days except Tuesdays in July and August, as well as all year round for groups, by reservation. Entry: 3 and 6 euros. Information on +33 3 85 68 22 85. Attention, because of works, the museum is currently closed and will reopen only in mid-March 2018.
Finally, in front of the town hall, the contemporary sculpture of the Triad, installed in 2000, signed Ambroise Monod, evokes the three industrial activities of yesteryear (iron, mine, glass). But this triple shape, slender, can also evoke wading birds.
On the environmental level, we will appreciate at Blanzy the shores of the Canal du Center, which connects the Saône to the Loire, but also the reservoir on the Sorme River and many areas still forested.
Hiking or mountain biking can include historical and natural sites, or facilities like the nautical stopover, built in 1997, where pleasure boats have replaced the barges of yore. Documentation, maps and information on +33 3 85 21 02 20.
On the cultural level, the Françoise-Giroud media library and the François Mitterrand space host exhibitions and shows. Information on +33 3 85 68 28 41.
For athletes, the water of the Sorme lends itself to the practice of sailing (dinghy, monohull or catamaran). Contact the local club on +33 9 52 85 14 46.
For a game of tennis, call the local association on +33 (0) 3 85 68 23 19, and for pétanque fans, the stadium bowling alley is available. The local club can also be reached on +33 (0) 6 15 48 31 49. A multi-sports court is also available free of charge on Bizet Street.
