The Orb canal bridge, also known as the Béziers canal bridge, in the Hérault, was built in 1854 and commissioned in 1858.
Its vocation is to carry the Canal du Midi which connects Toulouse to the Mediterranean, which until then borrowed the course of the Orb. However, the boats encountered difficulties during this passage. The course of the Orb was too low in summer, too high in winter, season during which floods were frequent.
Passing over the river, the canal bridge is 240 m long, 28 m wide, 12 m high and composed of 7 arches.
Listed on the complementary list of historical monuments, the canal bridge located downstream of the Locks Fonseranes has changed the landscape of the southwestern periphery of Béziers and spawned the creation of Port Neuf of the city. In this capacity, he contributed to the economic growth of Béziers.
A spectacular and charming work of art, the canal bridge includes towpaths on its banks.
It can thus be included in circuits of pedestrian excursions or cyclists. Unless it is borrowed aboard a pleasure boat during a cruise on the Canal du Midi, which joined the list of World Heritage of UNESCO in 1996.
