This small city on the Tarn, between Albi and Toulouse countries, retains a strong image of rural village. Bessières suffered from the same geographical position invasions, Celtic and Roman, the same drama - the Cathar heresy, the Hundred Years War - as so many other villages Occitan.
According to historians, it is also the ideal location that supports the foundation of Bessières between the 9th and the 12th century by the grouping of houses around a first church dedicated to Saint-Prim. But the town probably knows a relative development of the Roman occupation, with its bridge over the river Tarn. In the Middle Ages, serfs exploit the land lords, allowing land clearing and sanitation.
In the late 15th century, the cultivation of pastel gives new impetus to agriculture and trade under the old regime and the people of Bessières organize fairs and markets, so the village assembly decided to establish four fairs a year and set to Monday market day. This tradition, still alive, both perpetuates the existence of an open-air market and of a fat market, between November and March.
