Fort of the Justices

Monument in Besançon

Fort des Justices was located at Besançon, in the Doubs department.

Also called Fort Pajol, it was built during the war of 1870 in the Montrapon district, to the northwest of the city.

Made up of defensive devices enclosing and protecting casemates and powder magazines, it was intended to "block" the road leading to Vesoul and to protect the other fortifications established in the northwest, such as Fort des Montboucons.

However, it was not used during the various conflicts.

Abandoned, the site was however reclassified after the Second War and a gendarmerie barracks was established there.

Initially, the remains of the fort were thus preserved but during new work, consisting of building housing, most of what remained of the fort was razed.

Some casemates have however been modernized.

Visiting is not authorized.
