Fort de Bregille was built from 1820 to 1832 at the top of the hill of the same name, at an altitude of 446 m, northeast of the old town of Besançon. It remains one of the rare defensive elements of Besançon to have been built after the works designed by Vauban in the 17th century.
Become Fort Morand in 1887, Fort Bregille was intended to protect the old quarters of the city but also another fort, that of Beauregard.
Its construction was justified by the fact that this summit was considered strategic and vulnerable: an 18th century earthen work had been easily taken by the enemy in 1814.
However, although large and well equipped, the fort was not used in the conflict of 1870 or in World War I, simply because Besançon was somehow spared from these wars.
Now, it houses an animal pound and associative premises. However, access remains closed to the public (except for exceptional visits during, for example, Heritage Days).
Well preserved, the fort with its imposing facade can however mark out a walk on this green summit from which one enjoys unparalleled views of the city. This walk can be extended in the Breguille forest which surrounds the fort, where pedestrian paths and a fitness trail have been set up.
