Bishop’s Palace of Besançon

Monument in Besançon

The former episcopal palace of Besançon (also known as Hôtel de Grammont) now seat of the rectorate is located rue de la Convention, in the historic district of La Boucle, so called because of a meander formed by the course of the Doubs.

It was originally a house, the foundations of which date back to the 15th and 16th centuries, which Archbishop François-Joseph Grammont owned in this street and which he had enlarged at the turn of the 18th century. When he died in 1717, the mansion was let to his successors and in 1735, the whole was extended under the direction of the architect Jean-Pierre Galezot. A main staircase is notably fitted out.

Sold for some time to a private individual during the Revolution, the building regained its initial vocation in 1825 but the site was burnt down in 1883. The restored palace has since been equipped with roofs dotted with skylights with decorated frames.

In 1905, the whole became the property of the State and received from the offices of the rectorate.

Listed in the Inventory because of the old chapel where paintings and statues are housed but also for the quality of its facades, ironwork and the craftsmanship of the interior decorations (vestibule, living room, dining room), the the former bishops' palace also has a finely decorated portal (lion heads, coat of arms). It should also be noted that the main staircase, on the rear facade, is adorned with busts representing various bishops from past centuries.

Open from time to time for visitors. The rest of the time, this beautiful neo-classical ensemble can be admired from the outside during a stroll through the historic city center. Inquire on +33 3 81 80 92 55.
