The common Berrias-et-Casteljau, born from the association of two communities, occupies a special position in the South Ardeche. At the mouth of the gorges of Chassezac, the main hamlets and the village are located on the edge of a vast fertile agricultural plain that occupies just under half the total communal area. It is drained by the Granzon, a tributary of Chassezac. Agricultural activity is mainly oriented towards the vines, grains and seeds. Crossing the major road south of the Ardèche, the county 104, Berrias-et-Casteljau has the characteristics of a rural town with a perennial agriculture. This activity is complemented by the existence of a textile factory and a tourist and leisure economy, induced by its landscape, the presence of Chassezac and proximity to tourist centers of Vans and Vallon Pont d'Arc which should lie Space Return of the Chauvet Cave.

The population has increased steadily since the early 80s. The town is located midway between the major employment areas of Aubenas and Ales and close to employment areas smaller St. Ambroix and Vans. It is also close to quality leisure facilities: swimming pool Lablachère, multisport hall Vans, Lablachère stages, Vans and Ruoms, cinemas Rosières and Vans. A medical office was built by the municipality.

Community life is communal dynamic library, the Commandery of animation Jales, sports and cultural association, Occitan courses, UNRPA, bowling club, gym ...

In terms of heritage, the town of Berrias-et-Casteljau contains numerous treasures: wood Païolive, witness relic forest vegetation of the Mediterranean end of the glacial neolithic Commandery of Knights Templar of Jales; Berriasian stratotype; necropolis of dolmen Granges.

Things to see and do

The commander of the 12th century Jales. The "house" of the Commandery of Jales is located on a slight eminence in the middle of the plain of Berrias near the D104. It was built around 1140. A Templar Commandery was both an agricultural field, a retreat for monks and soldiers who were the Templars a place of recruitment to the order. Organized around a well, the entire 12th century included a chapel, a home for the Knights Templar, a storeroom and a farm building. From that time still currently pantry, restored in 1989, and the Romanesque chapel. During the Hundred Years War, the commander will be fortified. We still see substantial remains of this work. Of the 800 commanderies built by the Templars in France, only five of them have retained all of their buildings. The Commandery Jales one of them.
