City Lot, Midi-Pyrenees, Montcuq was popularized in the 1970s by a famous sketch by Daniel Prévost in Le Petit Rapporteur. Since then Montcuq is one of the most famous cities of France. It is about 25 kilometers from Cahors, in the heart of the Quercy Blanc region. Former capital of the medieval lordship, Montcuq is also on one of the roads to Saint Jacques de Compostela, the Via Podiensis. The former medieval castrum is built on a conical hill, with houses occupying the entire south slope.

One that hosted the singer Nino Ferrer for many years yet now has a prestigious heritage that recalls its glorious medieval hours. His notoriety due to his name so special, it is also an important tourism and a second degree of the most fun.

Full of charm, the city also has a very important social life, with many cultural and other entertainment events such as hiking or a beautiful artificial lake ideal for swimming.

Things to see and do

Medieval castrum, Montcuq still possesses some beautiful vestiges of the golden age of the Middle Ages.

The only remnant of the old castle of Montcuq is its keep built in the twelfth century. Top 24 meters, it is open to visitors to the summer and has a beautiful carved stone staircase that leads to the only door of the dungeon. You can admire very large rooms of 12 meters of 8, and, on four levels. If the lower hall was once the chimney, those of the first and second floors have beautiful fireplaces. The keep has been classified as an historic monument in the early twentieth century.

Built in the fourteenth century, the town of Montcuq is equipped with a belfry in which it is possible to admire a bell sixteenth century. Building around, one can discover beautiful houses dating from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

Nearby, the Saint-Hilaire church built in the fourteenth century has preserved a beautiful choir, with large Gothic windows and modern windows. It is surmounted by an octagonal bell tower of beauty.

Walking through the city, it is also possible to appreciate the chapel of the Franciscan convent, with its eleventh century portal, Castle Charry dating from the fifteenth century and listed historical monument, the ruins of the castle of Penne, or the church of St. Peter Rouillac twelfth century. The latter, listed building presents to visitors beautiful frescoes of the twelfth century once covered with a coating.

Ideal for swimming and other summer activities, the lake of St. Sernin, or lake of Montcuq, consists of a sandy beach and extensive lawns. children's games, riverfront for angling, or a summer restaurant are also offered.

Nearly Lebreil, one can find some cave dwellings.

Events and festivities

Animated and festive city Montcuq annually offers an extensive list of events and other events that brighten the streets of downtown.

Two weekly markets are held throughout the year Montcuq, Thursday and Sunday morning from 8am to 13h.

In July and August, the city offers art exhibition, a summer Montcuq. On this occasion, the region's artists are invited to submit their best works, paintings, photographs or other crafts.

Always in summer, offers Montcuq, once in July and once in August, an antique fair. The program includes over sixty professionals highlighting all kinds of goods.

The festival of song text is held every year in July to Montcuq. Quality concerts are offered to showcase French music of high quality, as well as gastronomic and rich heritage of the region.

Every year in August, and for over 40 years, the region hosts the festival of Quercy Blanc and Performing Arts. This is one of the oldest festivals in Midi-Pyrénées, fully turned to classical music. In different cities of the territory, as Montcuq, soloists, quartets and orchestras put on a show.

In September, the festival up Street Children. Numerous shows for all ages are presented. Puppets, circus, clowns or readings, storytelling and concerts are held in the streets of the old village.

The two days of Montcuq are an international endurance competition of 200 kilometers on horseback. It is held every year in October, and this is one of the most famous endurance race in the world.
