Located in the heart of the city, the synagogue of Belfort is a Jewish place of worship built in the mid-nineteenth century, under the Second Empire, in an incredible Neo-Byzantine style. Listed historical monument, it replaces an old building built in 1830 and demolished for public purpose because it was landlocked in a military field.
Built thanks to the generosity of fifty heads of families, it still has its original appearance today with two oriental cupolas, a ceiling with Gothic arches, or its Holy Arch carved in stucco arabesques and floral motifs. Full of charm, the building also allows you to admire beautiful bronze lamps, as well as stained glass windows from glass masters Beyer Besançon. Recently restored, the Ungerer clock dates back to the 1860s.
The synagogue of Belfort is still very active today and continues to host occasional cultural events. Beside, it is possible to visit the Jewish cemetery which reveals very beautiful tombs and other gravestones.
