The Saint-Barthélemy church is located in the new town of Vallées-en-Champagne, in the Aisne, in the village of Baulne-en-Brie, 11 km south of Dormans.
It was built in the 12th and 13th centuries in a Romanesque style. We can see that the original nave has four semicircular arches supported by rectangular pillars. The transept and the choir are also from the 12th century and are ribbed vaults. In the 16th century, the windows of the chapels formed on either side of the second transept bay were modified and widened.
Listed as a Historic Monument in 1920, the church is equipped at the level of the nave with recessed wooden ceilings with thwarted slats: it is one of the last ceilings of this type still preserved.
In addition, in the north transept, the funerary slab of Guillaume de Baulne, one of the last lords of the area, who died on April 12, 1255, is preserved.
Inside the building, again, the stockings - wooden reliefs of the pulpit to preach (16th century), a funeral plaque in the name of Madeleine de Castellan, widow of a king's adviser, and a beautiful statue of the Virgin and Child are to be admired.
The church of Baulne can mark a hike in this small but charming hilly region between Brie and Champagne…
