Bailleul

Camped atop a slight hill, Bailleul never lets the traveler indifferent.

Subtle blend of the attractions of the city and the mildness of the countryside, it leaves visitors with images of towers, gables and sounds of chimes.

Destroyed more than 90% during the first World War, Bailleul is revealed today one of the prettiest towns in Flanders.

The city has a wonderful heritage but has mostly preserved the ancient map of the city with its traditional buildings.

The Grand'Place, flowery, is dominated by the imposing belfry of the town hall, a World Heritage by UNESCO. The belfry has, besides a Gothic hall, a wonderful chime of 35 bells classified. On his way round, stunning views of the city and surrounding area offers visitors. The belfry is visited (contact the tourist office for more information).
See also the Museum of Benoit Puydt that, in an elegant setting of a private house, brings together various art witness of Flemish culture from the 15th to the 20th century and the House of Lace, lace school academic neo-Flemish presenting an exhibition of pieces of students.

The Museum of Benoit Puydt is open daily from 14 to 17.30 except Tuesdays and holidays.
The Lace House is open daily from 13h30 to 17h except Sunday and Monday.

The city of Bailleul still has many architectural elements that the visitor hastens to admire in each of its parts: the Church of St. Vaast, the original memorial, the public library, the Présidial ... A panel of monuments to be discovered in the Heritage Trail (available from the Tourist Office of Flanders hills).
For nature lovers, Bailleul has numerous hiking trails through the Flanders hills and a national botanical conservatory with a garden of wild plants of 9000 m². The Wild Plant Garden is open all year, Monday to Friday from 8h30 to 17h.

Carnival Bailleul: In February. For several days the city is transformed, leaving room for groups of masked men who dance and sing loudly. This is the great emotional release! !

The Feast of the Hommelpap: In September. This party organized by a farm-brewery Bailleul held every two years. Museums:

The museum of rural life, to Steenwerck: this museum displays clothes, traditional games, machines, antique furniture, tools and everyday objects. It reproduces the life of a Flemish village from 1850 to 1960, its shops and school. In the tavern, you can learn the Flemish games. It is open on Sundays from April to October from 15h to 19h, Monday to Friday in July and August from 14h to 18h.
The farm of Organs at Steenwerck: you will find many items of mechanical music, such as barrel organs, player pianos, limonaires, music boxes, phonographs, and other curiosities atypical, all running. During this tour, which is interactive, young and old will marvel at these rare objects straight out of the remnants of the past, and appear delighted! Open to individuals from April to October on Wednesdays from 14h to 17h (1:30 provide access) and on Sundays from 15:30 to 18:30 with two tours one at 15:30 and one at 17h. The rest of the year, activities are planned and ad hoc visits.
The Museum of Frontier Life in Godewaersvelde: Godewaersvelde commune, located at the foot of the Mont des Cats and the Belgian border, the old rectory was built in the village Museum of Frontier Life. Henry the giant Customs and his dog Tom or Dick (dog or customs fraud) stay there all year. The museum to discover the role of customs and "pipes" fraudsters. You will find many artifacts depicting the lives of people on the Franco-Belgian bike, custom costumes, objects defrauded ... To share the lives of these characters, you receive a questionnaire at the entrance. You choose your camp or customs fraud. The museum is open from 14h to 17h every day from April 1 to September 30, closed on Mondays.
The museum Yourcenar (1903-1987), St. Jans-Cappel: Marguerite de Crayencour Cleenweerck (anagram of Yourcenar) spent his childhood in the castle of Mont-Black, then in 1938 went to the United States (Maine) , where she taught French and art history. She published many books and entered the French Academy March 6, 1980. In 1987, Mr. Louis Sonneville, a resident of St. Jans-Cappel and admirer of Marguerite Yourcenar, sent him to America some hyacinth bulbs and soil of Mount Black. Then began a long correspondence, causing some projects such as the creation of the museum, which opened in 1985. It consists of three exhibition halls: one of his childhood in the castle of Mont-Black (1903 to 1913), consists of photographs and archival materials; another piece on "Petite Plaisance", its U.S. property , whose atmosphere has been recreated, a video room, where the tapes depicting the life of the author and present exposure. You can visit the places of childhood Yourcenar, by taking the "path of hyacinths" (6 km), which is a mixture of nature and literature, with pictures and quotations that line the route.

The Windmills: The constancy of the wind and the importance of the hydraulic network, but also the need to manage the countryside, to transform the raw materials were all factors of development in the number of mills (19th century). Regional agriculture, highly developed and diversified, has generated the construction of machines capable of grinding the seeds to extract oil and flour.

The Mill Boeschèpe: wooden windmill, historic monument. It is named "Ondank Meulen," that is to say, "Mill's ingratitude." It was built in 1802 at the Mound in wood, and was brought to Boeschèpe in 1884. He crushed the grain until 1958 and was bought by the town in 1964. At its base there is a small museum. The Steenmeulen at Terdeghem: windmill brick 3-story, still active (fishmeal). Built in 1864, he had three activities: production of oil, wheat flour and grind grain for cattle. Old Farm Machinery Show (early 20th century), old steam engines, old tractors. Open daily from 9am to 12pm and 14pm to 18pm. Closed Wednesdays and Sundays and last Monday of each month.

The Festivities:

The party with old, in Boeschèpe: This event is held the first Sunday in August. It is unusual to propose a flea objects before 1950. In the afternoon, you can attend a costume reconstruction of a scene from the life of the past.
The harvest festival, St. Jans-Cappel, near Bailleul: This festival is held the last weekend of August. We discover the ancient trades related to agriculture and the machines of the past. Animations are many: hop picking, threshing, flax, tobacco ... Regional market, various street festivals.
