Bas-Rhin village, in the Grand Est region, Avolsheim takes place at the foot of the vineyards of Finkenberg, about thirty kilometers from Strasbourg. It is located in the historical region of Alsace, near Molsheim, Wolsheim and Soultz-les-Bains.

Present from the eighth century, the town of Avolsheim takes place then on the old Gallo-Roman road linking Molsheim to Saverne. Formerly composed of two separate hamlets, it was the property of the bishopric of Strasbourg in the Middle Ages.

Full of charm, the Alsatian city continues to attract visitors with its rich historical and architectural heritage, but also by its proximity to some of the most beautiful cities in the region. Its landscapes, preserved and unique, are also the opportunity to make some nice walks to discover the local fauna and flora.

Things to see and do

Consecrated in the eleventh century by Pope Leo IX, the church of Dompeter is one of the oldest in Alsace. According to local legend, the building dates back to the end of the Roman Empire or the early years of the Christian era. Romanesque style, the building of the seventh century was rebuilt and enlarged in the course of the eleventh century. Many times modified over the following centuries, she sees her tower completely redone following an impact of lightning in the mid-eighteenth century. Left abandoned until the early 1930s, the church of Dompeter is then the subject of a major restoration campaign by the Scouts of France. It has become a great place of pilgrimage for this organization. At the entrance, it is possible to admire a thousand-year-old tree that died at the beginning of the 21st century, as well as a new growth.

At the beginning of the end of the 10th century, the Saint-Ulrich Ottonian Chapel is now classified as an historic monument. Transformed into a new church in the second half of the eighteenth century, it consists of a tetraconque considered the oldest sanctuary still existing in Alsace.

Do not miss either the Saint-Materne church, much more recent. Built in 1911 by Johann Knauth, it was not consecrated until twenty-five years later. In neo-Romanesque style, it hosts the 1867 organ of the church of Dompeter.

Erected at the very end of the 17th century, the Avolsheim dam was built on the artificial canal of La Bruche built by the famous Vauban. Originally, the latter was to allow the transport to Strasbourg of sandstone blocks from the quarry of Soultz-les-Bains and that of Wolxheim and used for the construction of the citadel.
