A flamboyant Gothic building from the 14th century, the Notre-Dame d'Avioth basilica, also known as the Cathedral of the Fields, takes place in the heart of the Meuse. Classified as a Historic Monument, it was born from the chance discovery of a statue of the Virgin and Child in the 12th century.
Located in a beautiful green setting, this stopover of numerous pilgrimages was consecrated to the rank of basilica in 1993 by Pope John Paul II. Inside, the two-level elevation offers a beautiful impression of height under the vault. It is also possible to admire, in the choir, an impressive Eucharistic cabinet.
Right next door, visitors can admire the Recevresse, a unique Gothic work of its kind which was used to receive offerings from pilgrims. Real stone lace, it has a life-size reproduction at the City of Architecture and Heritage in Paris.
Accessible on a self-guided tour, the Notre-Dame d'Avioth basilica can also be discovered on a guided tour by reservation in summer. The building also hosts concerts and other cultural events.
