The Verger Tarin museum is located in the town of Autun, in the department of Saône-et-Loire.
Located in the historic center of the city, near the cathedral, it was created in 1939 by a learned society to which the last owner of the premises had transferred the premises and their furniture.
The site itself is remarkable: the building has its origins in a building erected in 1475 to house altar boys and their teachers. After the Revolution, the residence was acquired by the local commander of the national guard and in 1845, his niece Louise-Philiberte Verger-Tarin inherited it. It was his granddaughter Marie Bachelet who donated it to the local learned society.
Certainly remodeled, this beautiful private mansion has been preserved with its stylish furniture, becoming in fact an ethnology museum dedicated to the art of living in the 18th and 19th centuries. The bedrooms, dining room, kitchen, libraries with their furniture, decorations, everyday objects, all of noble quality, constitute the museum's collection.
The establishment, owned by the city from 1954, closed its doors at the start of the 21st century. No reopening date is planned at this time.
The beautiful building which houses so many treasures can still be observed from the outside while waiting for better days...
